Delta pet policy at a glance

QuestionCurrent Delta position
Small dog/cat in cabin?Yes, on eligible routes, aircraft and seats with confirmed pet space.
Household birds in cabin?Domestic U.S. travel only.
General cabin weight limit? No universal current weight cap published; animal fit and under-seat carrier fit control.
Recommended soft carrier18 × 11 × 11 in; actual aircraft under-seat dimensions still control.
Current U.S./Canada/PR/USVI cabin fee$150 one way for tickets issued on/after April 8, 2025.
Ordinary passenger checked pet?No general service; limited military/Foreign Service transfer-order exception.
Ordinary household pet via Delta Cargo?Currently subject to a network-wide embargo.

Delta Air Lines currently offers ordinary pet travel mainly through its in-cabin pet program. Small eligible dogs and cats can travel in the cabin on qualifying routes, and household birds are accepted in the cabin on domestic U.S. travel. Larger-pet planning is much more restrictive: Delta's passenger checked-pet service is limited to eligible U.S. military and State Department Foreign Service travellers on active transfer orders, and Delta Cargo currently has a network-wide embargo on ordinary household-pet shipments with a limited military/Foreign Service PCS exception.

That makes Delta different from airlines that offer an open checked-baggage or manifest-cargo product to the general public. If your dog or cat cannot use Delta's cabin program, do not assume Delta can simply move the pet in the hold.

Important

A passenger ticket does not confirm pet space. Delta limits cabin-pet capacity and requires the pet to be added separately through Delta Reservations.

1. Choose the correct Delta pet pathway

In cabinThe normal Delta option for an ordinary traveller with a small eligible dog or cat. Household birds are limited to domestic U.S. travel.
Checked petA restricted service for eligible active U.S. military / Foreign Service travellers and qualifying family members on active transfer orders.
Delta CargoHousehold-pet shipments are currently under a network-wide embargo, with a limited military/Foreign Service PCS exception.

A traveller whose pet does not qualify for the cabin should not buy a ticket expecting to convert the pet to ordinary Delta Cargo later.

2. Which pets can travel in the Delta cabin?

On domestic flights within the contiguous U.S., Delta's current passenger page accepts small dogs, cats and household birds. Household birds are limited to domestic U.S. cabin travel. For dogs and cats travelling outside the contiguous U.S., acceptance depends on the destination, current government documentation and Delta's route exceptions.

Minimum age

  • Domestic cabin travel: at least 8 weeks.
  • Dog entering the U.S. from another country: at least 6 months.
  • Cat entering the U.S. from another country: at least 16 weeks under Delta's current page.
  • Travel to the European Union: at least 15 weeks.

The normal rule is one pet per kennel, with limited exceptions for an unweaned litter and for two compatible young pets of the same breed and size when they can fit safely together.

3. No universal cabin weight limit — and carrier fit is aircraft-specific

One of the most common search-result errors is a supposed 20 lb Delta cabin limit. Delta's current passenger-pet page does not publish a general combined pet-and-carrier weight cap.

Instead, the animal must fit comfortably inside the closed carrier, and the complete carrier must fit beneath the seat in front of the passenger on the actual aircraft.

Carrier size

Delta currently recommends a soft-sided kennel with maximum dimensions of 18 × 11 × 11 inches because that size fits many aircraft. It is not a guarantee for every aircraft or seat. Delta says the actual maximum dimensions depend on the under-seat space of the operating aircraft.

Soft-sided kennels must be leak-proof and ventilated on at least three sides for domestic travel and four sides for international travel.

Two-fit test

The carrier must fit the individual pet and the permitted under-seat space on every operating sector. See How to Choose a Pet Travel Carrier or Crate.

4. Cabin, seat, capacity and booking restrictions

Delta currently excludes ordinary cabin pets from bulkhead seats, emergency-exit rows, seats designated as having no stowage, flat-bed / Delta One seats, rows 46–51 on the A330-200, rows 54–59 on the A330-300, and centre seats on the B757-200.

Its current capacity table lists up to two cabin pets in qualifying domestic Delta First configurations and up to four in Delta Comfort / Delta Main. Delta One, Delta Premium and international business-class cabins do not accept ordinary cabin pets.

Cabin pets are accepted first-come, first-served. Make the passenger reservation, then contact Delta Reservations as soon as possible and have the carrier dimensions ready. Do not treat the passenger confirmation as pet confirmation.

5. Current Delta cabin-pet fees

Last checked: September 20, 2026. Fees are volatile.

Travel areaCurrent published one-way cabin-pet fee
U.S. / Canada / Puerto Rico / U.S. Virgin Islands$150 USD/CAD for tickets issued on or after Apr. 8, 2025
International$200 USD/CAD/EUR on eligible routes
Brazil$200 USD for tickets issued on or after Apr. 8, 2025

A published fee does not mean the route accepts the pet. Eligibility must still be checked separately.

6. International and route restrictions

Delta's current passenger page lists a number of cabin-pet exceptions. It currently identifies Australia, Barbados, Hong Kong, Iceland, Jamaica, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates among destinations where ordinary pets are not permitted in the cabin, with separate directional/special rules for Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Hawaii.

These should not be treated as a permanent worldwide yes/no list. Delta's language and government rules can be directional and can change. For example, its current international page separately describes a Republic of Ireland notification process.

Verify three layers independently: Delta acceptance on the actual flight, any transit requirements, and government permission at the destination. See International Pet Travel and Pet Travel Documents & Health Certificates.

7. Checked pets: military / Foreign Service only

Delta's current checked-pet program is for eligible active U.S. military members and U.S. State Department Foreign Service Officers and qualifying family members travelling on active transfer orders. It is not a general option for a civilian traveller with a large dog.

Delta currently requires eligible travellers to arrange the checked pet at least 48 hours before travel and publishes a $200 checked-pet fee on its current main route groups for current ticketing.

Accepted animals include cats and dogs other than the published snub-nosed exclusions. Household birds, guinea pigs, rabbits and hamsters are domestic-U.S.-only under this special program. Delta permits up to two crates per flight, but crate size and aircraft restrictions still apply.

Flight-level restrictions

  • No checked pet on a single Delta-operated flight over 12 hours.
  • No checked pet on an itinerary with more than one connection.
  • No checked/cargo animals on a Delta-operated 767.
  • No checked animals on a Delta-operated A330-200.
  • No checked animals on a Delta-operated B757 to/from Europe.

8. Delta Cargo household-pet shipments are currently embargoed

Delta Cargo currently states that it has a temporary global embargo on household-pet shipments. The limited exception is for eligible active U.S. military or Foreign Service Officers travelling with permanent-change-of-station orders.

For ordinary civilian travellers

If the pet is too large for Delta's cabin program, Delta Cargo is not currently a general household-pet fallback. Another airline or routing may be required.

Delta's commercial Specialized Live product continues to handle various categories of live animals, but that does not override the household-pet embargo for a private traveller's dog or cat.

9. Cargo rules for eligible PCS exceptions

For eligible military/Foreign Service PCS shipments, Delta Cargo is a separate air-cargo process, not a passenger-baggage handoff.

  • Current booking window: 1–14 days before departure.
  • Cats/dogs: at least 12 weeks domestic and 15 weeks international.
  • Dogs entering the U.S.: at least 6 months.
  • Dogs/cats must use a container meeting the applicable current IATA Live Animals Regulations, Container Requirement #1 and Delta Cargo rules.
  • Sedated or tranquilized animals are not accepted.
  • Current cargo documentation includes the shipper certification/journey declaration and applicable health documentation; Delta's April 2026 guide states applicable health certificates within 10 days of travel.

The 10-day certificate statement belongs to the current cargo pathway. It should not be generalized into a universal Delta cabin health-certificate rule.

10. Weather and breed restrictions

Delta's current military checked-pet page uses a 20–80°F (-7 to 26.5°C) operating range and requires a veterinary acclimation certificate when temperatures are between 20 and 45°F (-7 to 7°C). Delta Cargo's April 2026 preparation guide likewise instructs applicable live-animal shippers to verify temperatures between 20 and 80°F throughout ground handling at origin, transfer and destination.

Delta Cargo also prohibits brachycephalic / snub-nosed dogs and cats and their mixes. Delta's special checked-pet program has corresponding snub-nosed exclusions. Check the live Delta breed list rather than relying on a copied list that may become stale.

11. Cargo is a different airport journey

Eligible cargo pets must be tendered at designated Delta Cargo facilities, not the passenger ticket counter.

StageCurrent Delta Cargo guidance
Domestic tenderGenerally 4–6 hours before departure
International tender6 hours before departure
Acceptance cut-off2.5 hours domestic / 4 hours international
Domestic recovery targetAbout 2 hours after arrival
International recovery targetAbout 4 hours after arrival

Delta Cargo currently also lists household-pet station embargoes at Amsterdam (AMS), Paris (CDG), Frankfurt (FRA), London Heathrow (LHR), Seoul (ICN) and Tokyo Haneda (HND), even within the military/Foreign Service exception. Reconfirm these close to travel.

12. Connections, Delta Connection and partner-operated flights

The pet policy must be checked against the actual operating carrier on every sector. Delta explicitly tells cabin-pet travellers to verify partner-airline pet policies, and Delta Connection carriers can have different aircraft/capacity limits.

A ticket may display a Delta flight number while another airline operates the aircraft. Delta's international Contract of Carriage also contains additional animal restrictions for codeshare-partner itineraries, while partner airlines can apply their own discretionary animal services.

Codeshare check

An “DL” flight number is not proof that Delta's cabin-pet policy applies. Check the operated by carrier for every sector and obtain pet acceptance from that airline.

13. Airline acceptance and government permission are separate

Delta acceptance answers an airline question. It does not grant entry into another country or U.S. state.

Delta's current page points travellers with dogs entering the United States to the CDC framework, including current health, microchip, age and import-form requirements. Delta also calls out current New World Screwworm inspection documentation for affected routes. Destination governments can independently require vaccinations, microchips, permits, endorsements or quarantine arrangements.

Do not use one universal health-certificate timing rule. The required document and timing depend on transport mode, origin, transit and destination.

14. What to reconfirm before departure

  • Actual operating carrier for every sector.
  • Pet still confirmed on the reservation.
  • Aircraft type and seat/cabin remain compatible.
  • Carrier still fits the pet and the under-seat space.
  • Route and destination pet rules have not changed.
  • Government entry/transit documents remain valid.
  • For eligible non-cabin travel, weather remains within Delta limits throughout the journey.

Schedule or aircraft changes can invalidate a pet plan even when the passenger itinerary still looks workable.
